Ken Shirriff's blog has posted an article about the Intel 8087 Floating Point Coprocessor Chip. The coprocessor was introduced in 1980 to improve floating point computation speeds of the 8086 and 8088. The architecture was incorporated into the x86 design and is still in use. The 8087 was built using 3 um technology and could perform around 50k FLOPS.
